Nike Hoop Summit 2017: Viewing Info, Rosters and Players to Watch

Published by Bleacher Report on Thu, 06 Apr 2017

Future NBA stars will take the floor at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon, Friday, and they won't be doing so for the Trail Blazers. The 20th annual Nike Hoop Summit will pit the USA Junior National Select Team against the World Select Team in a battle for international supremacy. The United States team features the top high school seniors in the country, while the world team consists of the top players from other countries who are 19 years old or younger.According to the event's official website, the last seven No. 1 overall NBA draft picks played in this event. Notable names such as Kevin Durant, Kevin Garnett, Dirk Nowitzki, DeMarcus Cousins, Derrick Rose, Kevin Love, John Wall, Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis and Karl-Anthony Towns are all alumni of the Nike Hoops Summit. With that in mind, here is a look at the next crop of stars who will play this year. Viewing InfoDate: Friday, April 7Time: 10 p.m. ETTV: ESPN 2Live Stream: WatchESPN RostersThe rosters are courtesy of the event's official website. Players to WatchMohamed Bamba, C, United StatesThere may not be a better shot-blocker at the prep level than Mohamed Bamba, and he will anchor the United States' frontcourt in this game.Scout ranks him as a 5-star prospect and the No. 2 player and center in the class of 2017. His athleticism allows him to patrol the baseline on defense and swat plenty of shots, but it also helps him run the floor on the offensive end and attack the basket.Jonathan Givony and Mike Schmitz of DraftExpress said Bamba "will draw some inevitable comparisons to Rudy Gobert."Scout lists Texas, Duke, Kentucky and Michigan as interested schools, which means Bamba will get the opportunity to play with potential future teammates Friday.Blue Devils commits Wendell Carter Jr. (forward) and Gary Trent Jr. (guard) could form the core of future Duke starting lineups alongside Bamba in the middle. There is a similar situation with Kentucky commits Quade Green (guard) and Jarred Vanderbilt (forward). Those players could seize the opportunity to do some recruiting of their own while playing with the formidable big man.Look for Bamba to match up against Kentucky commit and center Nick Richards. Richards will lace it up for the world team, and Bamba may get an idea of where he would stand on a future depth chart depending on how well he does against the Jamaica native.Richards isn't the only player who will challenge Bamba. The world team's sheer size stands out with the 6'11" Richards, 7'3" Felipe Dos Anjos, 7'0" Ikechukwu Obiagu, 6'11" Borisa Simanic and 6'11" Isaiah Hartenstein. If Bamba stuffs the stat sheet Friday, it will be a testament to his ability to compete against some of the best players in the world. Trevon Duval, G, United StatesWhile Bamba patrols the paint, United States guard Trevon Duval will look to use his quickness and athleticism to slash into the lane and finish at the rim.Scout ranks him as a 5-star prospect and the No. 3 overall player and No. 1 point guard in the class of 2017. It lists Duke, Arizona, Baylor, Kansas and Seton Hall as interested schools.Much like Bamba, playing with Duval will give Trent and Carter an opportunity to demonstrate how well they fit together and do some recruiting for Duke. The potential future backcourt of Trent and Duval is a terrifying proposition for the rest of the ACC and could lead to a national championship down the line for the Blue Devils. In terms of Friday's game, exhibitions like this are often dominated by flashy plays and memorable moments.Given Duval's ability to blow past defenders with his ball-handling and speed, look for him to add plenty of highlights against the best the world has to offer.Nick Richards, C, World TeamThe elite talent is not limited to the United States side, as Kentucky-pledge Richards will unleash his own ability to protect the rim and dominate the boards for the world team.Scout ranks him as a 5-star prospect and the No. 16 overall player and No. 6 center in the 2017 class. While he is a Jamaica native, he transferred to The Patrick School in New Jersey and played under former Rutgers coach Mike Rice. Rice praised the prospect when discussing his upside with basketball writer Adam Zagoria:Everyone sees the upside the last couple of years with the incredible athleticism, the leaping ability, how quickly he gets off his feet, the way he runs and he moves, that's always been there. But what he's added to his game as far as the skill-work and the purpose and the footwork in the post, it's pretty incredible from just one year to the next. The chance to see Richards go one-on-one against Bamba in the paint Friday is worth the price of admission alone.Kentucky guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Richards will look to give Big Blue Nation a preview of the two-man game that is to come when they take the floor for the world team.
