Masters Odds 2017: Round-by-Round Predictions for Augusta

Published by Bleacher Report on Wed, 05 Apr 2017

Dustin Johnson is the top-ranked player on the tour in terms of FedEx Cup points and in his world ranking. He is also at the top of his game as he comes into this week's Masters Tournament having won three tour events in a row.Does all this mean Johnson is a cinch to win the Masters and earn his first green jacket' He is certainly in an excellent position to do so and is favored in the event to win, but it will likely be anything but easy.Golfers like Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth have had runaway victories in the Masters before, but Johnson is more likely to get plenty of competition from a stacked field that includes Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, Jon Rahm, Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Hideki Matsuyama.OddsShark has Johnson as the plus-550 favorite to win the Masters (a $100 bet on Johnson would return a profit of $550 plus the original $100 wager if Johnson wins the event). McIlroy is the second choice at plus-700, followed by Spieth at plus-800.After those three, there's a significant gap to Fowler, Day and Matsuyama at plus-1,800, followed by Rahm and Justin Rose at plus-2,500.Golfers rarely win big events in a wire-to-wire manner. A golfer can certainly lose a tournament with an awful first round, but a spectacular first round guarantees nothing. Here's how we see the tournament playing out.First roundDon't be surprised if a relatively unheralded player like England's Matthew Fitzpatrick sets the tone in the opening round.Fitzpatrick is the 31st-ranked player in the world, and the 22-year-old has played in five tour events this season and has made the cut in all of them. He has also finished in the top 25 in four of those events, so while he should be extremely excited to play in the Masters, he seems to like playing with the best players in the world. He will play with Martin Kaymer and Spieth, and they will tee off at 10:34 a.m. ET. While most will be focusing on Spieth, look for Fitzpatrick to steal the attention with an opening round of 67 that gives him the outright lead in the tournament.Spieth will shoot a 70, and he will be joined by McIlroy. Johnson will tee off with Bubba Watson and Jimmy Walker in the last grouping of the day at 2:03 p.m., and he will get off to an inauspicious start with a 72.Second roundWhile Johnson didn't do much in the first round, he will be sharper and more focused in the second round. He will put on a display with his driver and he will make enough putts to shoot a 68.Fitzpatrick will fade with a 73, while South African Louis Oosthuizen will join the fray with a 69. Phil Mickelson will bounce back from his opening round of 74 with a 68 in the second round.Spieth will show remarkable consistency with another 70, while McIlroy will be even better with a 69.The most notable aspect of the tournament at the midway point is that the normally inconsistent McIlroy will finish the first 36 holes with just one bogey.Watson will shoot himself into contention with an eye-opening 67 after a rather dull 74 in the opening round.Third roundIt's all about moving day at Augusta, as those who can come up with a good round on Saturday will have a chance to contend for the green jacket on Sunday.Johnson will continue to pound away with the driver, but he will miss a few putts that he needs to make and will have to settle for a 69.McIlroy will fire the best round of the day with a 66, and that will allow him to take a one-stroke lead over Oosthuizen. Spieth will find himself two strokes behind, and Johnson will trail McIlroy by four strokes.Others who find themselves within shouting distance of the lead include Mickelson, the charging Watson and former champion Adam Scott.Great players are all over the top of the leaderboard, and that should ensure a memorable finish on Sunday.Fourth roundThe saying goes that the Masters is not decided until the back nine on Sunday, but Mickelson will try to alter that storyline by firing a 32 on the front nine that moves him into the lead. However, Lefty will find plenty of trouble at Amen Corner and won't be able to sustain his great play.McIlroy avoids trouble throughout the round, but he doesn't make enough putts, and he ends up shooting an ordinary 70.Spieth has his game face on because he is desperate to pick up his second green jacket in three years. However, Spieth once again has similar trouble on the back nine that he faced last year, and he will fade away during the final four holes.Oosthuizen is known for his consistency, but he will feel the heat of the final round and shoot a 73.Johnson knows what he is capable of doing in the final round, and he lives up to his potential. He hits his stride in the back nine, and he takes a one-stroke lead into the 18th hole. He finishes with a flourish as he birdies the final hole, and he picks up the first Masters title of his career.Johnson is the best golfer in the world, and he proves it by taking the green jacket.
