Africas Fashion Top Feature At American Museum

The Fowler Museum at the University of California Los Angeles in association with Vlisco Netherlands, have organised the African-Print Fashion Now! A Story of Taste, Globalization and Style exhibition that aims to introduce audiences to the dynamic traditions of African.The exhibition, which opened on March 26 and concludes on July 30 will highlight the interplay between regional preferences and cosmopolitanism that has long flourished on the continent, while highlighting the expansiveness of 21st-century, African-print fashion.The exhibition received major funding from the National Endowment for the Arts with the additional support of R. L. Shep, DutchCulture, the Anawalt Program for the Study of Regional Dress, the Shirley and Ralph Shapiro Directors Discretionary Fund, the Pasadena Art Alliance, Lee Bronson, and the Fowler Textile Council will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue.The Fowler Museum at UCLA is one of the countrys most respected institutions devoted to exploring the arts and cultures of Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and the Americas.The designs lined up for the exhibitions demonstrate the vital role that African print has played in the expression of beauty, fashion, and heritage, while creating transcultural connections across Africa and into the larger world.Designers to be featured include Titi Ademola (London, based in Ghana), Ituen Bassey (Nigeria), Afua Dabanka (Germany, based in Ghana), Lisa Folawiyo (Nigeria), Adama Amanda Ndiaye (Democratic Republic of the Congo, based in Senegal), Alexis Temomanin (Cte dIvoire), Gilles Tour ( Cte dIvoire) and Patricia Waota ( Cte dIvoire). Ensembles on view feature full-length gowns and mens blazers, metallic wax print and architectural pleating and boning.
