Court Halts Proceedings In EFCCs Case Against Shema, 3 Others

Katsina State High Court 3, yesterday, granted a stay of proceedings in a N11 billion case brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against former governor of the state, Ibrahim Shema, and three former top ranking members of his administration.The court presided over by Justice Ibrahim Maikaita Bako also ordered that the application for amendment of the charges filed against the former governor and the other three accused persons: former commissioner for Local Government, Sani Hamisu Makana; former permanent secretary in the ministry, Lawal RufaI Safana, and ex-chairman of Kaita Local Government Area and former ALGON boss in the state, Lawal Ibrahim Dankaba, be step down pending the decision of the Court of Appeal on their motion for stay of proceedings on the matter.Justice Bako adjourned the case to 6th June, 2017, for the high court to await the determination of the applicants motion fixed for hearing on 25th May by the Court of Appeal in Kaduna, contrary to the defendants request for the matter to be adjourned indefinitely.Yesterday, the judge took arguments from the defendants/applicants lawyers led by Akinlolu Kehinde (SAN) and prosecution/respondents counsel led by Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) on the defendants motion for stay of proceedings in the matter.The court heard that the motion filed on 23rd March, 2017, at the Court of Appeal was scheduled for hearing on 25th May, 2017.
