Fourth-seeded Roger Federer defeated No. 14 Roberto Bautista Agut7-6 (5), 7-6 (4)Tuesday in the fourth round of the Miami Open at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne, Florida.By virtue of the win, Fed advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament and remains in the hunt for his third title of 2017.The Swiss superstar also improved his career record against Bautista Agut to a dominant 6-0, and he still has yet to drop a set to the Spaniard.Although it was a straight-set win for Federer, the match was a battle, as it took nearly two hours to put Bautista Agut away.Federer and Bautista Agut traded holds of serve for the first eight games of the match, but Bautista Agut scored the first break and had a chance to close out the set.The underdog was broken at love, however, and Federer went on to take the set in a hard-fought tiebreak, as seen in this video courtesy of Tennis TV:According to Jose Morgado of Diario Record, that continued Federer's recent impressive run in tiebreaks:Federer was excellent on serve for most of the first set, but he played sloppily at times and narrowly avoided falling behind.As pointed out by Craig O'Shannessy of ATPWorldTour.com, Fed found a way to prevail in the opening set despite not playing anywhere near his best:The second set began with Federer and Bautista Agut trading a break each, but it held true to form from that point forward with five holds apiece.Federer's usually beautiful style of tennis faltered at times, but he showed flashes of brilliance, such as this volley during a critical point on serve:There wasn't much pretty about Bautista Agut's game, but he was effective in terms of throwing Federer out of a rhythm and forcing him to grind the match out.As pointed out by O'Shannessy, the Spaniard seemed to dictate the pace of the match for the most part:Bautista Agut had Federer's back against the wall on numerous occasions, but he constantly found a way to win points and games.Fed's best play came in the second-set tiebreak, as he raced out to a 6-3 lead before Bautista Agut narrowed the margin to 6-4.Losing the next point would have put Bautista Agut back on serve, but Federer closed it out and once again avoided having to go to a decisive set:Federer's win sets the stage for a quarterfinal clash with a longtime opponent in 10th-seeded Tomas Berdych.Federer has largely owned Berdych over the years with a 17-6 mark, which includes six consecutive victories.En route to winning the 2017 Australian Open, Federer made quick work of the Czech in a round-of-32 match.Federer is quite possibly the favorite to win the Miami Open based on his remarkable form in 2017, and if he manages to go all the way, it will mark his first title at the tournament in 11 years.Post-Match ReactionFollowing his straight-sets win, Federer gave Bautista Agut a great deal of credit for the grit and determination he showed, according to ATPWorldTour.com:I felt good overall. It was a different kind of match. It wasn't the big-serving match where you're only going to see so many looks, so when you miss chances you always feel a bit frustrated sometimes. That's where you got to keep a positive mindset and make the right plays.I thought Roberto did a good job of making shots, staying offensive when he could, fending off a lot of good shots that I hit. Then it was tough. The sun was coming from the side in the beginning so it's hard to chase the lines. At the end I'm very happy and pleased that I got it done in straight sets.Federer pushed his way into the quarters, but may need to be sharper to defeat a potentially tougher opponent in the form of Berdych.
