Houston Rockets Take Aim at Single-Season 3-Point Record

Published by Bleacher Report on Wed, 29 Mar 2017

The Houston Rockets enter Tuesday evening's contest against the Golden State Warriors with 1,070 made three-point attempts on the season.Should they knock down another eight in the tilt, the club would surpass the Warriors' three-point makes from last season (1,077) for the most in NBA history, per ESPN Stats & Info.Houston has employed a strategy of focusing on the offensive end and winning by simply outshooting its opponents to victory. It's worked for the most part, as the Rockets currently reside in the third spot in the Western Conference standings behind Golden State and the San Antonio Spurs. The club ranks second in offensive efficiency (112.5) on the season, but the team is just in the middle of the pack (105.9) on the defensive end of the floor, per ESPN.com.The Rockets aren't afraid to chuck the ball from beyond the arc either, averaging 40.3 attempts from thethree-point line each game. In second are the Cleveland Cavaliers, who average just 33.6 three-point attempts per game. Houston doesn't shoot a particularly great percentage from deep either, converting at just a 36.4 percent clip to rank 13th in the league. From an individual standpoint, Eric Gordon leads the team with 3.4 three-pointers per game, followed by James Harden (3.2), Ryan Anderson (2.8), Trevor Ariza (2.5) and Lou Williams (2.3). Williams shoots most efficiently from three, making 40.2 percent of his attempts.Ironically, the Rockets have a chance to top the Warriors' mark from last season in the process of playing them. While it would be a cool milestone for the collective, Houston sits six games behind the Spurs and 6.5 games ahead of the Utah Jazz in the standings. With only nine games remaining in the regular season, the club will likely rest some of its regular players down the stretch to preserve their health for a playoff run.
