LaVar Ball Says He Is Glad Steve Alford Will Remain UCLA's Head Basketball Coach

Published by Bleacher Report on Sun, 26 Mar 2017

Count LaVar Ball among those happy UCLA Bruins head coach Steve Alford isn't leaving for the Indiana Hoosiers after theyhired Archie Miller as their new head coach Saturday.Speaking to ESPN.com's Jeff Goodman, Ball explained he supports Alford's continued presence because of his familiarity with LiAngelo and LaMelo Ball's skill sets."I feel good about that," he said. "He knows my boys. I like his style, and I'm glad he's staying."LiAngelo (class of 2017) and LaMelo(class of 2019)have both committed to play for the Bruins, and the way their brother Lonzo performed during his lone season at UCLA suggests they could put up stellar numbers in Alford's uptempo system. In 36 games with the Bruins, Lonzo averaged14.6 points, 7.6 assists and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 55.1 percent from the field and 41.2 percent from three for the nation's No. 2 scoring offense. Those figures bode well for LiAngelo, especially, because he's considered the most prolific shooter of the bunch."He's chasing Lonzo and has the same mindset," LaVar said, per Goodman. "He's a different type of player. He's 6-foot-6, 240 pounds and is a scorer. He might average 20 next year, maybe even close to 30 a game. He's been a scorer all his life."And considering Alford could be without his top four scorersLonzo, TJ Leaf, Bryce Alford and Isaac Hamiltonfrom this season when the 2017-18 campaign opens, LiAngelo could be asked to shoulder a heavy offensive burden for the Bruins as they seek back-to-back NCAA tournament berths for the first time since 2014-15.
