Lagos Intensifies Sensitization On Sustainable Development Goals

Lagos State Government said it has increased its sensitization programme on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) also known as transforming our world to keep its residents abreast of the benefits that accrue to them from the programme.The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget Mr. Abayomi Kadri who stated this while briefing journalists in Lagos said the state government has deemed it pertinent to kick start the third phase of the awareness and sensitization program by organizing a workshop for all 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas in the stateAccording to him, this will afford the residents the opportunity to familiarize with these goals and targets which will assist in driving and achieving the overall objectives of SDGs which is being all inclusive with no one left behind.Abayomi explained that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted at the 70th General Assembly of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which elapsed in September,2015.The SDGs has 17 goals and 169 targets, which demonstrate the scale and ambition of this new Universal Agenda, are believed to have the capacity to impact positively on the living standards of people.The Sensitization of these goals was organized for the management staff of this ministry in November, 2016 representing the first phase of the program.Sequel to the above and in view of the need to cascade the Goals to all MDAs in the State .The Development Partnership Department organized the second phase of the program which is awareness and sensitization of the Goals and its targets to 33 core MDAs across the State in conjunction with United Kingdom Department for International Development (UKDFID).The sensitization workshop focused on the need to activate the engagement of all relevant stakeholders in the public sector who will directly assist in driving and achieving the developmental goals. United Kingdom Department for International Development (UKDFID) provided the technical assistance for the program.To further toe the line of the standard decision of the awareness of the SDGs as being practiced globally, the Development Partnership Department in conjunction with United Kingdom Department for International Development (UKDFID) and United Nation Information Center (UNIC), he said.Abayomi said the Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas have been divided into three senatorial districts, which are Lagos East, West and Central Senatorial districts.
