Senates Refusal To Confirm Magu Must Be Condemned

Published by Leadership on Wed, 22 Mar 2017

Well-meaning Nigerians, especially the Northern Elites, have been called upon to stand up and condemn the refusal of the Nigerian Senate to confirm the hitherto Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, as the substantive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).Speaking to LEADERSHIP in Abuja, the Director, physical planning and Municipal Services, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Aminu Sambo, described the turning down of the confirmation as unfair and suggestive of threat felt by some corrupt members in the red chamber seeing the fearless and hard-line posture of the anti-graft helmsman, even as acting Chair. He said, It is so worrisome and unfortunate that, to the best of my knowledge, after a committee set up by Mr President to investigate the allegations of corruption against Magu had absorbed him of any wrong doing, his name was forwarded a second time by a president who was very eager to work with him, for confirmation, but was again rejected. What is even more agitating is that the failed to summon this man that was indicted for their own findings but relied on the allegations of the Department of State Security Service (DSS) to reject his confirmation. He noted that a similar scenario befell Justice Nkanu Onnoghen, who was acting before Mr President proceeded on vacation to the UK, but when his people, joined by other Nigerians, cried out for people to see why he should be confirmed as the substantive Chief Judge, within a week, the Senate approved and the Vice (then Acting)-President, Yemi Osinbajo, swore him in, even as the President was still away on vacation. My greatest worry is that everybody is keeping mute; nobody, not even the Northern elites, is talking about this which I think is an act of injustice to the entire North, he said, calling on Nigerians to rise up against all forms of injustice, corruption and those who perpetrate them.
