Delta Proposes Law To Protect Persons With Disability

The Delta State Government is to sponsor a bill of law that will protect the rights of persons living with disability. The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Peter Mrakpor who confirmed this to journalists yesterday in Asaba, disclosed that the bill for the law will criminalize the abuse and in discrimination of persons living with disability, adding that the bill would soon be forwarded to the State House of Assembly for consideration and passage.The Commissioner explained that the state government was committed to ensuring adequate protection of disable persons fundamental rights and against all forms of molestation, emphasizing that it was the responsibility of government to protect and promote human dignity and the rights of all persons in society against torture, harassment and degrading treatment.He maintained that every individual is entitled to respect, irrespective of status and abilities and promised to look into a case of an alleged illegal arrest and detention of one of the disabled persons, a deaf and dump who could neither read nor write.Meanwhile, 31 unregistered orphanage homes may be closed by the state government who said their activities fell short of standard.Confirming the move, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Social Development, Mrs. Omoshola Williams, emphasized that the state government will not necessitate to close down the orphanage homes for alleged breach of regulatory rules in the operation of orphanage homes.
