Census: NPC To Use Satellite Imagery For Area Demarcation In Kaduna

Published by Leadership on Tue, 14 Feb 2017

The federal commissioner National Population Commission(NPC) Kaduna State,Alhaji Yau Usman, said high resolution satellite imagery will be used to ensure that no area is left undemarcated or no place is duplicated preparatory for the 2018 census in the state.Usman, said the methodology adopted for the census is designed to achieve full Geographic information system(GIS) compliance. He said personal digital assistance (PDA) will be also used in capturing spatial data and estimate enumeration areas during the demarcation. The NPC commissioner said the third phase of the Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD) will commence this month in Ikara Council area of the state as one of the key activities for the forthcoming head count.Usman, explained that to effectively enumerate all persons within a reasonable period,it becomes imperative to divide the whole land mass of the country into small units that can be easily covered by team of enumerators during the census.Addressing a news conference in Kaduna, the NPC commissioner, said the enumeration area demarcation forms the basis for the planning and execution of the census project. He added that in the post census period, the products of EAD would be required for effective dissemination of the census data particularly at the small area level.Usman said the methodology will not allow for the creation of imaginary enumeration Areas and any attempt to include non- existent households and buildings will be detected through satellite imagery. The NPC commissioner noted that the commission had demarcated 37 council areas in the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory under the previous phases of the EAD which Kaduna South was demarcated in the state under the phase two.The NPC commissioner said barring fund constraint, the commission would be able to complete the EAD before the end of the year.According to him: This scientific approach to demarcation will eliminate human elements as the process is capable of detecting human errors and preventing manipulations.
