Senate Queries Immigration Over N62m Spent On Project Monitoring

The Senate yesterday queried the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) over what it described as frivolous and reckless spending of the 2016 budget allocation.The senate committee on Interior while interfacing with the agency frowned at the services spending of a whopping sum of N62 million on project monitoring, wondering why it will lavish such amount of money on project monitoring alone when the country is facing economic recess.The senators who were visibly not satisfied with the presentation by the comptroller General of Immigration , Mr Babandele Mohammed on the 2016 budget performance had picked holes on the agencys budget performance , adding that it was wrong for the service to spend almost 100 % of the total budget sum.The comptroller General had in his submission stated that the service needed about 200 hundred vehicles for its operation and surveillance, adding that it embarked on routine project monitoring to ascertain the progress of the projects.The lawmakers had equally observed that the said projects that gulfed N62 million for project monitoring were not matched and attached to the budget.The senators had complained that almost all the capital projects in the 2016 budget which were funded were repeated in the 2017 budget. It particularly queried the service request for the purchase of 200 vehicles.
