People Cannot Get Over The Way Trump Described Frederick Douglass

Published by Huffington Post on Wed, 01 Feb 2017

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump gave a televised speech in honor of Black History Month. Unsurprisingly, he noted several celebrated black American historical figures, including Martin Luther King Jr, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks and Frederick Douglass. But people immediately noticed that something about his description of Douglassa man who escaped slavery to become an acclaimed author, abolitionist and civil rights activistwas a little uh, off.Trump just described Frederick Douglass as "someone who has done a terrific job that is being recognized by more and more people" David Frum (@davidfrum) February 1, 2017 Technically, Frum didnt get the quote exactly right, based on footage of the speech. But he was pretty darn close. Trump referenced Douglass as an example of somebody who has done an amazing job and is being recognized more and more I notice.Trumps bizarre tribute to Douglass did not go unnoticed by the rest of Twitter, either.@davidfrum to be fair... pic.twitter.com/ALnm8pwL4H ElElegante101 (@skolanach) February 1, 2017 RT @davidfrum Trump described Frederick Douglass as "someone who has done a terrific job that is being recognized by more and more people" pic.twitter.com/PlqaCiofOV ' 27 Instruments ' (@BuayDubz) February 1, 2017 Some questioned if the quote was even real (It is.)@davidfrum At this point, I literally can not tell if this is a joke. Jeneen Interlandi (@JInterlandi) February 1, 2017 Still others pondered whether our president is aware of who Frederick Douglass was.@davidfrum Please tell me he has an intern coincidentally named Frederick Douglass...
