Nurses Embark On Peaceful Protest Over Unpaid Allowances In Uyo

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, University of Uyo Teaching Hospital branch on Wednesday embarked on a peaceful protest demanding payment of their allowances from the federal Ministry of Health.The protesting nurses, who carried placards with inscription federal government pay us our Skipping allowance, uniform allowance and night allowance, we are no slaves, we have been pushed to the wall please give us our right.Speaking with newsmen Acting Chair Person National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives NANNM Mrs Ekaete Akan Akwa Ibom state council expressed dismay towards the Federal Ministry of Health over its insensitivity towards the plight of nurses in the country.She said the union decided to embark on the protest to draw the attention of the Federal Government to the plight of the Nurses who toil night and day to ensure the stability in the health sector.We work both day and night under serious conditions to see to the health of our patients but we are not being treated fairly take for instance our members are being owed several months of unpaid allowances and other entitlements.Some of our members who were promoted for over five years have not been paid their areas of promotionsWe have written several correspondences on the issue to the Federal Government and Federal Ministry of Health but to no avail.So we are embarked on this peaceful protest to tell the Federal Government that we are tired of being treated like and an underdog after working so hard in our different departments she stated.Addressing the protesting nurses on behalf of the Chief Medical Director of the Teaching Hospital, Mr. Thompson Ikpe Director of Administration commended the peaceful manner by which the nurses embarked on the protest.He however said that management will forward their protest to appropriate quarters where all the issues raised would be looked into.
