Mega Handball Reaffirms Commitment To Grassroots Development

Published by Leadership on Wed, 01 Feb 2017

The Mega Veterans Handball Limited has restated its commitment to the development of handball at the grassroots, as that remained the only way to get the nations young people off the street and away from bad company. The vice-chairman of the group, Jibrin Sheidu, who stated this in a chat with LEADERSHIP Sports, said the entity, made up of former national team players, league players, team managers and coaches would not allow the ineptitude of the leadership of the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) to kill the game and jeopardise the future of Nigerian youths.Sheidu faulted the HFN, as presently led by Alhaji Yusuf Dauda, for attending to his personal interest, instead of pushing for the development of the game at the grassroots.Nigeria is seriously losing out of handball, because of the personal interests of one man. For the past two years the federation has not organised any competition and the board meet at all.The president takes decisions without consulting any of the board members. Under him, the African Handball Confederation (CAHB) denied Nigerias senior women handball team from participating in the 22nd edition of the womens Senior African Nations Cup in Angola, between November 28 and December 17, 2016 in Luanda.Inspite of his attitude, we cannot fold our hands and let this go on, until the sport is killed. We love this game and [have] played it to the highest level. As a means of supporting and encouraging young people to play the game and make them valuable to the society, we have a scholarship programme which is already running. Also, we are trying to build youth development programms in all secondary schools to harness talents from there. We have already earmarked certain schools in the FCT as a part of the pilot scheme and we would soon write officially to seek the support of the FCT Education Secretariat for the progammes. Also, we are in touch with our foreign partners in Norway, Sweden and other parts of the world to assist us with sports equipment that will be used to develop the game and encourage the youths, Sheidu stated.
