Conor McGregor Reveals He Will Not Have a Role on Game of Thrones

Published by Bleacher Report on Mon, 30 Jan 2017

UFC star Conor McGregor dispelled the rumors he would be appearing on Season 7 of Game of Thrones, saying in no uncertain terms during aninterview on the Good Times Network variety channel he wouldn't have a cameo on the show, asJames Hibberd of EW.com relayed Monday:That was everywhere and I've never even heard about it! I heard about it once after [a fight]backstage in the dressing room. [UFC brass, including Dana White, were] in front of me and they were saying 'these [visitors] want you to be inGame of Thrones.' I'm banged up, my shin's in a heap, I've been kicking his knee's straight for 25 minutes, my leg's in bits, and he's trying to offer me aGame of Thronesrole. And I'm saying, 'Listen, come at me with s--t I want to hear, I'm not trying to be in show business, I'm trying to be in the fight business. Come at me with a real number to fight again.' So that was the only time I ever heard the [words]Games of Thrones. And it went everywhere like months later! So I don't know where that came from. But I've never been in contact with nobody fromGame of Thronesand now I'm starring inGame off--kingThrones!The rumor of McGregor's casting made the rounds on the internet before Dana White appeared to confirm it during an interview on Fox Sports Live, saying: "I knew that a few months ago that they were interested in putting him in the show. Im glad he did it. Itll be great."Clearly, however, McGregor did not do the show, making White's comments curious. As for McGregor's actual future plans, he continues to push for a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. In a Q&A session in England this past weekend, he mentioned negotiations with the retired boxer (h/tScott RaffertyofRolling Stone): "I'll go to Vegas, we'll figure the situation out, and well come to a dotted line and then we're going. This is happening."While McGregor continues to push heavily for the fight, Mayweather has been more reserved. Nonetheless, he didn't outright deny the possibility of the two fighting when asked about the subject during an interview on Showtime on Saturday night."I believe the fight could happen," he said, perESPN.com. "He's a tough competitor and has proved throughout the years in the UFC that he can fight standing up. So we'll just have to see what the future holds.Hopefully we can make the fight happen."Since the fight would be a boxing match, Mayweather would be the prohibitive favorite. Mayweather, after all, was a perfect 49-0 against men who had trained their entire lives to be boxers. McGregor, meanwhile, is21-3 as an MMA fighter and is the UFC's biggest star, but he's never trained exclusively as a boxer.Contractual obligations will also be an issue, as McGregor is still under contract with the UFC. For that reason, White has been less optimistic the fight will take place, sayingatUFC Fight Night in Denver on Saturdaynight he had a better chance of being Tom Brady's backup quarterback at the Super Bowl.White is putting the chances of the fight at zero, in other words, which we now know is also the chance McGregor has of being on Season 7 ofGame of Thrones. It turns out the logistics of this proposed fight are dark and full of terrors.
