Braxton Burmeister Switches Commitment from Arizona to Oregon

Published by Bleacher Report on Sat, 14 Jan 2017

Braxton Burmeister had initially committed to the Arizona Wildcats in May, but the 4-starquarterback reportedly had a change of heart and will head to another Pac-12 school in the fall.According to theTucson Star's Zack Rosenblatt, Burmeister officially committed to the Oregon Ducks on Friday.Although Burmeister originally announced he intended to suit up for the Wildcats, the story changed when Oregoncame calling with an offeron Jan. 4.As it turns out, it took Burmeister all of nine days to flip his commitment after the Ducks pitched him on a future partnership with new head coachWillie Taggart.A class of 2017 recruit, Burmeister is the No. 3 quarterback in the state of California and No. 24 signal-caller in the nation, according toScout. The senior also grades out eighth overall among quarterbacks in the West region.Based on the numbers he posted as a senior at La Jolla Country Day School, that impressive standing among his peers isn't surprising.Over the course of 16 games during his senior season, Burmeister lit up opposing defenses to the tune of 4,461 yards and 53 touchdowns on 63.3 percent passing. And that was just with his arm.According toMaxPreps, the dual-threat machine piled up an additional 1,470 yards and 27 scores on the ground. The question now is how long it will take before Burmeister sees meaningful snaps in the Ducks offense.Oregon already has Justin Herbert in tow, and he appears in line to keep the starting gig after he impressed by throwing for 1,936 yards and 19 touchdowns in eight games as a freshman. However, Taggart has made it clear he wants to push Herbert to be the best he can be by bringing in prized recruits at the same position."Competition is always a great ingredient to help guys get better," the new coach said, perThe Oregonian'sTyson Alger."We have to go out there and recruit guys to come in and take our current guys' jobs, and it's on our current guys to keep their jobs."With a talented prospect like Burmeister joining him in Oregon, Herbert should have all the motivation he needs to take his game to the next level and maintain a grip on the starting gig under center.Recruit information courtesy of Scout.
