NPA To Train Staff At Lagos Business School

Published by Leadership on Wed, 11 Jan 2017

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) will partner Lagos Business School (LBS) to train its staff as well as chart a career course for new employees of the agency according to NPAs executive director, finance and administration, Dr. Bello Koko.He said that henceforth, promotion exercise at the NPA would now be tied to training that has been undergone by staff, especially those in top management cadre. Koko noted that the agency, in ensuring a succession plan for its staff, has noted that many of the old staff are retiring in less than one year and that those who will take over from them do not have the requisite knowledge. We have started having discussions with well-instituted training organisations like the Lagos Business School; we have a training plan to chat a career for our colleagues to say that before you become a principal manager, an assistant general manager (AGM) and so on, you must have gone through certain kinds of training. It could be a leadership training or training towards becoming a better person in the harbours department and so on. The essence is to chart a course for everyone and ensure we dont have lapses. We have observed an issue with succession plans, the older hands are going to retire in the next one year, but those behind them do not have the requisite knowledge, so we are working on that situation. In recent times, we have promoted staff that was hitherto stagnated for nine to 13 years, he added. The NPA executive director also recalled that the agency had recently carried out a staff audit to find out where there is shortage of personnel in some departments, so that it can move personnel to those departments.
