Luis Suarez, Barcelona Agree on New Contract: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction

Published by Bleacher Report on Thu, 15 Dec 2016

Barcelona announced on Thursday that Luis Suarez signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2021.The Uruguayan striker's previous deal at the Camp Nou was still set to run until 2019, but Barca have moved quickly to tie him to extended terms given his phenomenal form.Per Sky Sports, there had been reports linking Suarez with a potential move to Manchester United for a world-record transfer fee, but this new deal will effectively end any speculation about his Barca future."We want [Suarez] to stay at the club for many more years," Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu recently said, per BBC Sport.Suarez moved to Barcelona from Liverpool in 2014 for a reported 75 million following a phenomenal season with the Reds in which he almost propelled them to a first league title since 1990.Incredibly, he has kept his form consistent at the Camp Nou and arguably is now even better. In two full seasons with the Catalan club, he has won La Liga and the Copa del Rey twice, claimed a UEFA Champions League title and triumphed in the FIFA Club World Cup.Suarez's goalscoring consistency has been quite staggering, as he has netted 66 times in 76 La Liga games for Barca, winning the European Golden Shoe for 2015-16 after returning 40 league goals, per WhoScored.com.Along with Neymar and Lionel Messi, the former Ajax forward has formed arguably the greatest front three of all time at Barca, and it is little surprise the La Liga giants have tied him to new terms despite his current deal still having plenty of time left to run.In a list of the world's best strikers, likely only Sergio Aguero and Robert Lewandowski could trouble Suarez for the top spot.He is a phenomenal talent and is at the peak of his powers, and signing him to a new contract can only be good news for Barcelona as they go in search of a Liga, Copa and Champions League treble in 2016-17.
