Veterans Emody the Need for Lifelong Learning

Published by Huffington Post on Thu, 08 Dec 2016

As we grow up most of us don't exactly enjoy going to school and learning. Why is that' I'm one of those that couldn't stand going to school and learning -- I had horrible grades in elementary school and just better than horrible in middle school. Until I answered the question of why, the answer is different for everyone, I was unable to be successful. For me the answer was structured learning as it was designed and pushed on the students was not working for me. I had to learn how to learn, my way, not the way some group of people decided was the "right way" based solely on their experience and some study that was performed (more than likely before I was born). Once I figured that out I was well on my way to great success in lifelong learning. My passion grew stronger and stronger for lifelong learning with each degree and certification I completed, which were propelling me along at a good speed within an industry that was very competitive, Information Technology. By the time I finished my Master's Degree I had a 4.0 GPA and was accepted into a PhD program. I now read at least four books a month, a mix of self-development, business and pleasure. When we get into our desired career path we need to continue to learn and grasp new concepts quicker than ever before. If we let ourselves become stagnant in knowledge our career growth will follow the same path. Our military veterans have been exposed to situations that require them to continue to learn, grow and adapt at a moment's notice. They are able to take this core skill with them into any situation and be a huge standout success. As our military transition to the civilian sector they are posed with many situations of continuing to learn new concepts and skill sets. This is a daunting task but with the various other core strengths a Veteran possesses this is achievable. "The capacity to learn is a gift; The ability to learn is a skill; The willingness to learn is a choice." - Brian HerbertThere are many benefits to having the core skill of lifelong learning:Puts you out front of those that are not learning new conceptsKeeps you abreast of changes and more easily adaptable to itGives you a leg up in interviews or consideration for internal promotionsAllows your brain to flourish due to the neuroplasticity of itThere have been extensive studies done on the neuroplasticity of the human brain. It has been proven that the brain is not static and shaped only at a particular point in development. The brain has the capacity to grow over time with constant learning and exercising of its functionality. As a Veteran be the one that puts these study results to the test and make lifelong learning a core strength that will propel you into a successful future as well.Landmark Life Coaching's Mission is to honorably and respectfully serve courageous groundbreakers and transitioning veterans to persevere in defining and executing their future by providing an atmosphere of comradery and trust that honors their dedication and commitment.
