N-Power: Group Tasks Govts On Grassroots Awareness, Enlightenment

Published by Leadership on Fri, 25 Nov 2016

Worried by the low turn-up of youths from the North and especially Adamawa State for Federal Governments N-Power Volunteer Corps, a non-governmental organisation, Adamawa Youths For Sustainable Development Initiative (YSDI)has tasked governments at all levels on awareness and enlightenment in youth employment programmes. The group, in a statement signed by its leader, Aliyu Abubakar, Friday, stated that issues of youth empowerment should be treated by governments at all levels with utmost attention and consideration. The governments at all levels, from state governments to the local government should embark on massive awareness campaign and youth enlightenment on the project. From the state government to the senators, federal and state house of assembly members, local government chairmen as well as councilorsall governments should provide avenues for youths at grassroots levels with internet resources for easy and efficient access to the registration portal. It is sad that many youths in the rural areas didnt take the employment opportunity because there was little or no awareness, and others lacked efficient internet access at their places of residence. We are meant to understand that a second badge of such exercise will come in the near future. It is our hope that there will be a proper reach out to the youths in the rural areas for the next phase of the programme, the statement reads. The group also urged the heads of government agencies to focus on the youths especially in standardizing the employment and empowerment process and ensuring that the process is made more transparent, accountable and inclusive as it is not going to be business as usual.Recall that two days ago the federal government released the names of the beneficiaries for the first batch of the N-power programme. A total of 200,000 candidates were selected for the take-off stage set to kick-off Dec 1st.The N-Power Volunteer Corps is an attempt by the President Muhammadu Buharis administration to invest in the human capital development of Nigerian citizens, particularly the youths. The N-Power programmme is also an innovative means to enhance public services that are short of man-power in the area of basic education and primary healthcare. Also in the agriculture sector, it is aimed at achieving self-sufficiency by giving farmers relevant advisory services. The newly formed NGO is aimed at promoting youth empowerment, enlightenment, education and motivation toward becoming national leaders imbued with the qualities of hardwork, honesty, integrity, respect for the rule of law, fear of God, and nationalism.
