Tanzania to Implement the International Monetary Fund's Enhanced General Data Dissemination System

At the request of the authorities a mission from the International Monetary Funds Statistics Department led by Mr. Andrew Kitili visited Dar-es-Salaam during October19'25,2016, to assist with the implementation of the Enhanced General Data Dissemination System (e-GDDS), which was endorsed by the Executive Board in May2015. The mission helped develop the National Summary Data Page (NSDP), currently on the National Bureau of Statistics website, utilizing the Open Data Platform installed with the support of the African Development Bank, to serve as a one-stop publication vehicle for essential macroeconomic data. This sets Tanzania firmly among the first wave of countries to implement the e-GDDS.Publication of essential macroeconomic data through the NSDP will provide national policy makers and a broad range of national and international stakeholders, including investors and rating agencies, with access to information that the IMFs Executive Board has identified as critical for monitoring economic conditions and policies. Making this information easily accessible in both human, license free and machine readable formats will allow all users to have simultaneous access to timely data released on a disciplined dissemination schedule based on an Advance Release Calendar, which will bring greater data transparency.The authorities are very pleased that Tanzania has reached this important milestone in the dissemination of quality statistics.BackgroundThe e-GDDS was established by the IMFs Executive Board in May2015 to support improved data transparency, encourage statistical development, and help create synergies between data dissemination and surveillance. The e-GDDS superseded the GDDS, which had been established in 1997.
