Bobby Roode's successful NXT run continued Saturday at NXT TakeOver: Toronto, as he defeated Tye Dillinger in front of his hometown fans.Roode and Dillinger engaged in a back-and-forth affair that whipped the Toronto crowd into a frenzy, and while Dillinger came close to pulling off the upset on several occasions, Roode prevailed with the Glorious DDT.Following Roode's victory, announcer Corey Graves summed up his popularity well, according to WWE Universe:Both Roode and Dillinger are Canada natives who have long thought highly of themselves, so it made sense when they joined forces to compete in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.Although Dillinger was apprehensive about teaming with The Glorious One, Roode convinced him that together they could honor the memory of The American Dream by winning the tournament named after him.The Perfect 10 eventually agreed, but he came to regret that decision shortly thereafter, as Roode bailed on him during their first-round match against Sanity. That resulted in Roode and Dillinger getting eliminated from the tournament, and Roode predictably blamed his partner for the early exit.An enraged Dillinger soon became obsessed with getting revenge on Roode, and he was given that opportunity at NXT TakeOver: Toronto, when NXT general manager William Regal officially announced the match.Ever the antagonist, Roode went out of his way to play mind games with Dillinger ahead of the huge event one night before Survivor Series:Despite Roode's attempts to throw Dillinger off his game, the Perfect 10 remained laser-focused on ensuring his rival got what was coming to him:Dillinger also went into TakeOver with something to prove and aimed to show the world that he was better than Roode despite having gained far less notoriety over the years, according to WWE.com's Byron Saxton:I don't mind being the underdog in this. I've been the underdog my whole career. I'm sure there are WWE officials who don't think I can pull this one off. I understand that. Bobby's track record of accomplishments in this industry far surpasses mine. Everywhere Bobby's gone, he's made it to the top. However, my greatest trait far surpasses most and isn't one you can find on my resume.I don't quit and can't be broken. I have been through every up and down you can imagine in the world of sports entertainment and I am still here running strong. The WWE Universe, I feel, have realized that and now, Bobby is starting to as well. [Roode] isn't better than me, he's just had better opportunities until now. On Nov. 19 at the Air Canada Centre, I will stand in front of 10,000-plus Canadians and I'm going to give Bobby Roode a next-level asskicking.Dillinger was the unquestioned underdog in Saturday's match due largely to the fact that Roode has been built as one of the yellow brand's top villains ever since his arrival. With Austin Aries on the shelf due to an eye injury, it was seemingly more important than ever to ensure that Roode remained strong and in position to move up the card.In addition to that, Roode is a two-time TNA World Heavyweight champion who has already shown that he is capable of being the face of an entire wrestling company. All of those factors pointed in the 39-year-old veteran's favor, and they pushed him to victory in a heated match that captured the attention of the sold-out crowd.Dillinger likely received a boost simply by putting on such a strong showing, while Roode may very well have put himself in position to step up and take on Shinsuke Nakamura in the near future.Listen toRing Rust Radiofor all of the hot wrestling topics.
