Kevin Owens vs. Seth Rollins: Winner and Reaction from WWE Hell in a Cell 2016

Published by Bleacher Report on Mon, 31 Oct 2016

Kevin Owens successfully retained the WWE Universal Championship Sunday night by defeating Seth Rollins in a Hell in a Cell match. The WWE Universe broke down how the match ended:The Hell in a Cell aspect of the match was on full display, as Bleacher Report's Ryan Dilbert noted:Chris Jericho snuck inside the cage to help out his buddy Owens, and after the match was over, he hit Rollins with a codebreaker (via WWE Network):Black Sports Online's Robert Littal is already looking forward to a match between the two down the line:Aaron Oster of the Baltimore Sun provided his initial take on the match:KO and Rollins have been at odds for the past several months due to the circumstances surrounding Owens winning the Universal title. After Finn Balor was forced to vacate the championship due to injury the night after SummerSlam, a Fatal 4-Way between Owens, Rollins, Roman Reigns and Big Cass took place on Raw to determine who would become the new titleholder.Triple H shockingly interfered by taking out Reigns, and just when it appeared as though he was about to help Rollins win the title, he turned on his former protege by hitting him with a Pedigree to ensure Owens would win the Universal Championship. While the former architect of The Shield was granted a one-on-one match with Owens for the title at Clash of Champions, Chris Jericho's interference, along with Stephanie McMahon's timely referee change, resulted in Rollins falling short.Raw general manager Mick Foley then decided to give Rollins one more shot at the belt due to the controversy surrounding what occurred at Clash of Champions, and The Man vowed to take down those he believed to be holding him back, according to WWE's official Twitter account:Before that bout, however, Jericho was given a chance to shake things up. If he could defeat Rollins in a match on Raw, Stephanie agreed to make the Hell in a Cell match a Triple Threat for the Universal Championship. While Rollins managed to come out on top against Y2J, there was plenty of damage done after the contest, as Owens and Jericho attacked the former WWE world heavyweight champion. As seen in this photo courtesy of Rollins' Twitter account, he wore a number of war woundsleading up to Hell in a Cell:There is perhaps no more dangerous match in wrestling than Hell in a Cell, and Rollins entered at a disadvantage due to the bumps and bruises Owens and Jericho inflicted. In addition to that, the looming possibility Jericho or Triple H interfering hung over the match like a black cloud, causing Rollins to be viewed as a significant underdog. As expected, Rollins and Owens put on a spectacular match inside the demonic structure and continued to prove they have great in-ring chemistry. Both Owens and Rollins are deserving and capable of being the face of Raw as Universal champion, but KO once again managed to escape with the title in tow by hook or by crook over his chief rival. While Rollins has come up short in big matches quite often as of late, the manner in which Sunday's bout played out may be a positive for him in the long run, because it brought him one step closer to being the babyface character he has been trending toward as of late. One can only assume Rollins will be embroiled in a feud with Owens and The Authority for a long time to come, and even though that means he is being held down for now, it will make it even more special when he does finally overcome the odds to become Universal champion for the first time.
