Luis Suarez Reveals Desire to Retire at Barcelona During Golden Shoe Ceremony

Published by Bleacher Report on Thu, 20 Oct 2016

Luis Suarez revealed that he wants to remain at Barcelona for the rest of his career as he collected the European Golden Shoe for 2015-16 on Thursday. The Uruguayan's remarkable 40-goal return in La Liga as Barca won the title last season saw him crowned Europe's most prolific league goalscorer, with Gonzalo Higuain coming in second after netting 36 times for Napoli in Serie A.Collecting the award for the second timehe shared it with Cristiano Ronaldo while at Liverpool in 2013-14Suarez, 29, revealed his wish to retire at the Camp Nou, per Barcelona:Suarez has been one of the world's top strikers for some time now having truly showed his consistent quality after his 2011 move to Liverpool from Ajax. However, he has stepped up a level since making the switch to the Camp Nou in 2014, winning a UEFA Champions League and back-to-back La Liga titles. His goalscoring has been staggering, and it has not let up in the new seasonhe already has six La Liga and two Champions League goals in a combined 11 appearances in 2016-17, per WhoScored.com.Alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar, Suarez is part of arguably the greatest front three of all time, and the Uruguay international hailed his team-mates as he collected his award, per Barca:Suarez's career has been marred with various controversies, including three incidents of biting, accusations of racism and an infamous deliberate handball at the 2010 FIFA World Cup that denied Ghana a place in the semi-finals, per ESPN FC's Paul Carr.Since his move to the Catalan giants, though, he has mostly hit the headlines for his remarkable performances on the pitch.Per Barca, he showed his appreciation for the club upon picking up the Golden Shoe: "I want to thank Barca for bringing me here and allowing me to fulfil my goals. ...I have fought a lot in my life, and since coming to Barca, I am trying to enjoy it, be happy and win trophies."It is little surprise that Suarez harbours no desire to move on from Barcelona, as he could have no better prospects at any other club in the world. The longer he stays in top form, the longer Barcelona will remaincompetitivefor major honours, and it would be a huge shock if Suarez has not added significantly to his trophy cabinet by the time he comes to hang up his boots.
