Colin Kaepernick vs. Blaine Gabbert: Updates on 49ers' QB Battle

Published by Bleacher Report on Fri, 07 Oct 2016

The San Francisco 49ers were outmatched during a 33-21 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday, and head coach Chip Kelly said after the game he wasnt ready to decide if he will keep Blaine Gabbert at quarterback or switch to Colin Kaepernick, perKevin Jonesof KNBR in San Francisco.Continue for updates.Latest on Quarterback BattleThursday, Oct. 6The 49ers are 1-4 on the season and wont take the field again until Sunday, Oct. 16 after playing on Thursday. That gives Kelly more time than a typical game week to evaluate the quarterback spot, and he said, were going to look at everything, perEric Branchof theSan Francisco Chronicle.Gabbert finished Thursdays game at 18-of-31 passing for 162 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. While he did add 70 rushing yards and a score on the ground in garbage time, it didnt make a difference in the outcome. The crowd was chanting for Kaepernick to enter the game, and offensive lineman Joe Staley said, "Yeah, I'm not deaf," when asked if he heard, per Branch.Gabbert said he didnt hear the chanting, per Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area: Im focused on leading the 11 guys on the field. When youre in the game and in a situation like that, your focus on that play, that specific drive. So were all locked in and thats it.Gabbert now has six interceptions in the last four contests, all of which were San Francisco losses.I let this team and this organization down tonight, he said, perJones. The former No. 10 overall pick has never appeared in a playoff game in six years for the Jacksonville Jaguars and 49ers and has failed to live up to expectations that come with being such a high pick. As a result, he could cede the offense to Kaepernick moving forward. While he has generated more headlines for kneeling during the national anthem than his play this season, Kaepernick is not far removed from being a Super Bowl quarterback. He directed the 49ers to the Super Bowl in the 2012 season, where they eventually lost to the Baltimore Ravens, and led them to the NFC Championship Game the next year.He also has two seasons of more than 3,000 passing yards on his resume and would provide a rushing threat alongside running back Carlos Hyde in Kellys read-option looks.Kaepernick has a more established track record than Gabbert and will apparently garner additional looks from Kelly as the 49ers attempt to turn around their lackluster start.
